Así Habla el Río

This project is currently in process, more documentation is needed, clay tablets need to be made and large sun prints are being tested.

This project is done in collaboration with Lengua de Tigre Art Collective.

Así Habla el Río is a community-based art and environmental project that begins by listening. Through clay harvesting, walking, observing, collecting stories, and creating artworks with materials from the San Marcos River, the project invites people to build a deeper relationship with the river and understand it as a living being rather than a resource.

The clay gathered from the river becomes both material and witness. It carries traces of water, sediment, plants, animals, and human presence. Through sculpture, natural pigments, sun prints, botanical works, analog printmaking techniques and community actions, participants learn from the river while reflecting on how our choices affect its future.

The San Marcos River is one of the most biologically diverse aquatic ecosystems in the Southwest and home to endangered species such as Texas wild rice and the fountain darter. Protecting the river requires both scientific knowledge and cultural connection.

This project asks a simple question:

What would the river tell us if we stopped long enough to listen?

The exhibition is organized into Three chapters:

1. The River Speaks

Photographic documentation of clay harvesting

2. The Language of Clay

clay tablets and stamps made from harvested river clay. Marks and impressions become a visual language inspired by water currents, plants, animal tracks, and memory.

3. Sun and Flora

Works created directly with plants growing along the riverbanks. Using sunlight, natural pigments, botanical printing, and painting, the river’s flora becomes both subject and collaborator.
